Knight leans back on their desk chair, still reeling from the dream they had just written about. They put their hand up to their face, letting out a long, exasperated sigh.
This one's definitely the weirdest entry yet, like what the hell... My hands are all shakey just from thinking of it...
I really don't get it...
How come I've been getting these weird moon dreams?? I've asked myself that like a thousand times now but I just can't get over it! You'd think after like what, five-ish months would've been stopped but NOPE! They haven't! At all!! In fact, they've been happening more often recently! Hell, I probably should've expected something weird like this to happen!
Knight leans back foward to shut off their computer, but not before letting out a guttural groan of pure, unfiltered frustration.
"What'd I even do to deserve this...?" Knight asks to themself, putting their head in their hands.
"I just don't get it... I've tried what must have like a hundred different suggestion my friends gave to me to try and stop these dreams but they haven't worked at all... All that happened was me blowing like, a hundred bucks on different types of tea and sleep meds."
They let out another sigh.
"Gah... whatever... I should just go on that walk, I'm going crazy in here. What time is it, even?"
Swiveling their chair, they look over at the digital clock on their nightstand. Its bright red LEDs read:11:34PM.
That's... not ideal, but whatever. I need some air.
Getting up from their chair, Knight switches out of the pajamas they wore to bed into something more suitable for their trip: a blazer, a pair of gloves, some jeans, and one of their many striped shirts. They also equip the things they may need: their flip phone, chain-attached wallet, and pocketknife.
This area's pretty crime-free, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't arm myself. Like who knows what could happen this late at night? Plus, it was a pretty cool birthday gift.
When opening their room's door to leave, Knight gazes over the note on their desk. For some odd reason, they feel an indescribable urge to take it with them. Like it's something important they can't go without.
...
Nope.
Shutting the door behind them without a second thought, Knight begins heading out of their apartment.
They walk through the hallway, passing by the various objects and pictures hung on the walls. They walk past the kitchen and the living room, taking quick glances to see if anything is out of place at all. After locking the door behind them, they leave their apartment, and eventually out of the complex entirely.
Knight begins their walk; the icy wind blankets their face. It's cloudy, with a few openings revealing the night sky. The full moon peers out of a particularly big opening. The fact that it's out tonight makes them feel a visceral kind of discomfort.
God, it's like it's watching me...
Let's just get this over with.
During their walk, Knight ends up walking alongside a road near the woods. As they do so, their mind begins to drift a bit.
I hate this a lot.
I hate that a stupid dream is making go out this late. I'm only ever out this late when I HAVE to. God, I probably seem like such a freak walking out this late and thinking all this shit, but I really can't bring myself to care anymore. This is like the 7th time I've done this. I'm so tired of it all. I don't even remember the last time I've had a regular dream anymore. Even when one seems normal at first, it always morphs into something about the moon. It just pisses me off at this point. I just want to sleep normally again, man.
I swear if there's somehow someone or something behind this, I'm really gonna let them have it.
...
I'm hungry. And pretty thirsty. I should've done something about that before I left... Isn't there a gas station around here? I think I saw one around here once...
Right as Knight thought that, they spot the aforementioned gas station ahead of them.
Huh, neat.
They begin to head towards the gas station. As they walk, they take a moment to take a look behind them. The once visible moon has now been shrouded by clouds, giving Knight's mind a bit of respite, even if its gaze could return again in a few minutes.
What to drink, what to drink... Maybe I should get something other than like, a Dr. Salt NEO this time. Could be nice to drink something else for a chance. Maybe a Moonkist- actually, maybe not. Why am I even fretting over this? I gotta get back home soon anyway. But it wouldn't hurt to get something different...
Whatever, to hell with variety; I'll just get a Dr. Salt.
Now to get some chips...
After a few minutes of contemplating and meandering, Knight grabs the drink and the foodstuff they've decided on buying and brings them up to the counter.
"Evening," the store clerk greets.
"
Good evening," Knight greets back.
"Nice night, huh?" the clerk continues, beginning to scan their items.
Knight lets out an somewhat awkward laugh. "
Yeah... it is."
Why is this guy talking to me.
"If it wasn't so chilly, I'd be out stargazing, especially with the full moon tonight," they go on as they finish scanning Knight's items.
"
Mm-hm."
"It's real big tonight, too. It's almost like its... alive in a way."
... What?
Why would they-
"That'll be seven dollars and ninety-seven cents," the clerk adds.
With a silent nod, Knight takes out the debit card from their wallet and puts it into the card reader.
"
You uh, must really like the moon, huh..." they say, feigning nonchalance.
"Sure do man," the clerk answers. "Would you like a bag?"
"
Yeah." Knight responds.
The clerk bags their items and hands it to them.
"Have a nice night, now."
"
Yeah... thanks."
Knight emerges out from the gas station, somewhat exhausted from the conversation they just had.
The hell was that about? What'd that guy mean by it being "alive"?
Gah!! What's it even matter?? I'm so done with these damn dreams and the moon... I just wanna go home. I've been out long enough.
... What time is it anyway?
Knight pulls out their phone and flips it open. The time reads:
11:59PM.
It's almost midnight. Weird, this walk felt like it took like five minutes. Maybe because I was thinking to myself the entire t-
Suddenly, Knight's phone inexplicably shuts off.
The hell? My battery was at a high percent! What's... g-
Knight looks up from their phone, only to notice that the area has completely blacked out. The now unobscured
moon barely illuminates the vicinity with its pale light.
No one is around.
The cars that had been driving up and down the street have completely vanished.
They turn around to see that the lights in the store have gone out, too. Even the clerk that had bothered them is gone.
The
moon glares at Knight in the reflection of the store's glass.
Turning back around, they call out: "
Hello...? Anybody?"
Their voice echoes through the dark.
...
But nobody came.
What the fuck is going on?? This... can't be real. This can't be real. I... I must be still dreaming! That must be it! There's no way something like this is actually happening! I'll wake up any second now like before!
Right?
RIGHT???
Am I stuck here...?
Then, Knight begins to hear... something.
Something right at the edge of their hearing.
Something
that they've heard before.
